A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Best Show Evah: The Physical Revue
by Crashing Vor
Time-wasting on Facebook, propping up the bar, enlivening tedious road trips, the question often comes up: What performance do you wish you could have seen? Hendrix at the Fillmore? Fess on the Queen Mary? Television at CBGBs? Ludwig van at the premiere of the Ninth?
All of the above, yes. (I did catch Television at the Mabuhay in 77 or 78, so that's something).
But recently, I learned of a show that's shot to the top of my "wish I'd been there" list.
In 1951, Harvard physics professor Lewis Branscomb told his students that their next class would be a review session for their final exam, and such it proved to be, though the spelling was off. The session actually proved to be the first performance of a nerdalicious musical comedy entitled "The Physical Revue," written by then-grad student Tom Lehrer and performed by faculty and assistants.
Think Gilbert and Sullivan meets Fermi and Oppenheimer. It is surely the only musical comedy show whose cast members went on to become Nobel laureates, science advisors to presidents, atomic bomb designers and peace activists.
When an encore performance of the Revue was requested, Prof. Norman Ramsey had the foresight not only to record the performance, but to carefully conserve the recording over the decades, transferring it from wire to tape to digital as recording technology matured.
These are the very first known recordings of Lehrer compositions and, despite the somewhat primitive tech (and distant mic placement), are of reasonable fidelity. And, while these great scientists and their peers have yet to give us a time machine so that we may enjoy the show in person, we still have a front row seat!
The Physics and Astronomy Department of Haverford College has posted (some of) Ramsey's recordings on its online archive of physics and science songs (hey, they don't call 'em nerds for nothing). Here's the link to the songs, along with links to more pages on the bios and careers of the various dramatis personae, plus more information on the inception and performances of "The Physical Revue."
While not quite the same as being there, it is a musical and historical treat, and you'll never, ever get a recording of the premiere of the Ninth, so count your blessings.
Is there a particular musical or dramatic performance
that, for you, would be worth the time and
expense of building a time machine
and, if so, what is it?

by Azazello ♥ for Baja Arizona Kossacks
The Baja Kossacks just had their 4th Annual Picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. sneakers563. The group is shepherded by Azazello, an official member of DKos since 2009. From his diary and about his state:
More and better Democrats is always a popular subject for debate here in Baja AZ, especially in an election year. Against the charge that Arizona is an incurably red state I often point out that 5 of our 9 US Reps are Democrats. This is true but it doesn't tell the whole story. While we in Tucson are justifiably proud of Raúl Grijalva (Wikipedia HERE) whose first elected office was board member for Tucson Unified School District #1, most of Tucson and all of Cochise County are now represented by Ron Barber (Wikipedia HERE) who is a very Blue Dog indeed. For an example of this Blue Doggedness see this article at Alternet ☛ 5 Million Dirty Reasons for Record Deportations.
He's on top of it and thanks to him for gathering Kossacks together to become stronger.
Here's the group photo:

Four Kossack regional groups descend on the California State Capitol
to demand that Governor Jerry Brown ban
the oil and gas production process known as fracking
by navajo ♥ for Connect! Unite! Act!
Representing Northern California, the SFKossacks, Central Valley Kossacks, Paradise & Chico Kossacks and the Silicon Valley Kossacks gathered on the mall of our state capitol in Sacramento on Saturday, March 15th to protest fracking. Governor Brown has the ability to ban the environmentally destructive, water-intensive oil extraction practice known as hydraulic fracturing in California. The state is in a severe drought and the last place our water should go is into fracking. It is estimated the protesters numbered around 4000. We endured the hot sun which sent the temperatures into the 80s as we gathered midday to make a lot of noise and get the attention of the Governor.
Please note red arrow pointing to our Daily Kos banner to gather all us Kossacks together!
Please visit paradise50's diary for his terrific photos!
